ROCKY SEASHORE and WOODLAND ecosystems are available for study at Leaving certificate and Junior certificate levels for school groups. Both ecosystems are ideal for identification of a wide variety of plant and animal species and to examine distribution and population size of these species. Food webs and examples of adaptations and competition are also studied. Each ecosystem study begins and ends with a classroom session to make sure students get the most from their day, worksheets are provided so that students can easily record the work they do.

OTHER BURREN ENVIRONMENTS

Limestone Pavements

The most characteristic habitat of the Burren are the large areas of limestone pavement. In the contrasting micro environments of clint and gryke can be found many of the Burren's rare flowers.

Limestone Uplands

On the hilltops heath and wild grassland contrast with cultivated grassland and hazel scrub in the valleys. Heather and other acid loving plants can often be found in association with limestone loving plants due to the usual soil conditions.

Seashore

The rocky coastline of North Clare provides excellent examples of both exposed and sheltered shorelines. Here the interrelationships between communities and their physical environment be closely studied providing many examples of adaptation and competition.

Woodland

Although not characteristic of the Burren nearby woodland areas, can be visited to examine the wide range of plant and insect species found in these areas and how, they interact with each other.
