PROGRAMMES FOR SCHOOLS AND YOUTH GROUPS
It is widely accepted that outdoor activities provide students with a unique learning environment that promotes personal and social development encouraging a wide range of supplementary learning outcomes. These outcomes are hard to measure or record but can be seen as changes in a person’s confidence or ability to work with others.
If there are any particular outcomes you want for your group please let us know. Examples:
- • Sense of adventure
- • Fun
- • Environmental awareness
- • Teamwork
- • Challenge
- • Communication skills
- • Decision making
- • Participation
- • Group bonding
- • Self reliance
All the staff at the Burren outdoor education centre are approved by National Governing Bodies for the various activities. This ensures the highest safety standards and more enjoyment for the group but restricts the size of groups we can work with. Our staff/student ratios are:
Caving / rock-climbing / kayaking / body boarding 1 : 8 Hill-walking / orienteering / team tasks 1 : 12

Multi-activity
All our activity programmes are designed to be flexible, choose from our wide range of Burren land and water based activities (NB some are weather dependant) and we will draw up a programme to suit.
Transition Year
TY programmes at the Burren OEC provide opportunities for students to experience a range of adventure activities and team games while learning new skills and developing social awareness and competence.
Spread over 2 to 5 days students will participate in a range of activities, experience challenge and achievement and learn and develop new skills. Teachers find this type of programme an ideal way for students to bond in new class groups
Leaving Cert Applied
LCA programmes are designed to meet the requirement of the Outdoor Education modules.
Students will :
- Participate in physical activities and experience success and enjoyment
- Develop a positive attitude towards further participation in physical activities
- Learn skills and knowledge for selected activities in a safe manner
- Develop personal and social relationships through involvement in activities
In this way learning outcomes for the Leisure and Recreation and Active Leisure Studies modules can be achieved.
National schools
Our adventure activities are available for students from fifth class and sixth class. New for 2012: younger students can avail of our "Junior Burren explorer" programme - a day or half day of fun learning activities based on exploration and environment in the Burren.
An Gaisce
Burren OEC is an approved Gaisce centre to host groups participating in The Presidents award. We provide several options for completion of the Venture section of An Gaisce Awards.
A number of hikes (15miles for the bronze level award) are available which fulfill the requirement for the awards, these are best taken over 1 and a 1/2 days. We can provide the necessary training, support and facilities to help you complete this task. Our staff can advise you on your selection of walking routes and any preparation required. We can also offer accommodation and kitchen facilities (catered or self-catering).
Please remember an important aspect of this award is that the students are involved in the planning and completion of the challenge.
